My Journey

Why 'The Diabetic Journeyman'?

The name reflects two major parts of my life: living with Type 1 Diabetes for over 31 years and working as a journeyman millwright. I realized I could bring those two paths together, sharing what I’ve learned in hopes of helping others on their journey.

For anyone unfamiliar, a journeyman[mentor] is someone who’s skilled and experienced in a trade, fully qualified and able to work independently. In a way, that’s how I see my role in the diabetes community too: someone who’s been through it, still learning, and here to support others.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 at just 4 years old, but that never stopped me from doing the things I loved like playing baseball, competitive dancing, becoming a millwright, and staying active outdoors.

As I got older, I realized that most quick carb options hadn’t changed in decades. With all the camping, hiking, road trips and life on the go, maple syrup became something I reached for more and more. After experimenting with ways to portion and carry it, I knew I wanted to share what I’d created with others living the same kind of day to day.
